T-shirt printing in Malaysia

T-shirt printing in Malaysia
There are many methods to print T-shirt. Different methods have its pro and cons.  I have compiled following base on my research and understanding. I hope this will help those want to start up a t-shirt printing company. Please take note that following is just my personal reference, it might vary from the actual situation.

Screening Printing - Creating screens pressed up against cloth to place paint onto shirts one color per screen. Pros: cost effective, high quality, professional, durability. Cons: each color requires a separate screen, messy.

Heat Press INKJET Transfers - Print transparent inks using a computer onto a special piece of paper. Use heat to adhere the ink and paper onto the cloth. Pros: easy to print multiple colors and complex designs, does not require different colors to be applied separately, great for small orders, easily customize different shirts. Cons: works well on white shirts.

Vinyl  - Use a machine to cut out designs on special solid color sheets of vinyl. Use heat to adhere cut vinyl to adhere vinyl to paper. Pros: high quality, durability, easily customize different shirts, great for small orders. Cons: have to separate and cut out each color independently

Print Direct to T-shirt - Print inks directly onto cloth. Pros: reduces steps, patterns doesn't have heavy feel like screen printing, great for small orders, easily customize different shirts. Cons: Slow production. The cloth is the brightest part of the design: works well on white shirts.

Dye Sublimation - Dye sub is great for full color designs on white or light colored garments. It has no feel to the design but is a little trickier to master than inkjet heat transfers. Also, it tends to be a bit more expensive. You can also use this process on non textile products such as mugs, mousepads, tile, puzzles, coasters, key chains, etc.

Heat Press vs Silk Screen

Heat Press
Heat press refers to printing graphics on shirts using transfer paper and a heat press machine. A shirt is placed in the machine, and transfer paper is placed face-down over the shirt. The heating unit is brought down over them for a prescribed time to print the image on the shirt.Transfer paper is available for inkjet. The design must be flipped horizontally and printed to the transfer paper prior to use. It is also possible to silk screen onto transfer paper.

Advantages
With heat transfer, the unit cost is low for short-run, full-color image, and good quality. Heat-press technology is capable of printing any digital image created in programs such as Adobe Photoshop.

Silk Screen
Silk screen is a versatile printing technique suitable for printing on shirts, paper, wood, plastic and glass. The design is transferred to a frame with screen mesh stretched taut across it. Ink is pressed through the screen with a squeegee.Silk screens are coated with a light sensitive photo emulsion. Graphics are printed on clear vellum and placed over the screen, then exposed to a strong light for a prescribed time. The image is developed with warm water under pressure.

Advantages
Screen printing is cost-effective for volume order and with one or two-color printing. Silk screen works best with dynamic, iconic images specifically prepared for the medium.

Benefits of T-shirt Printing

Sometimes t-shirt printing required in order to raise funds or money for noble causes. That's why you need to go for cheap or low cost t-shirt printing. The main advantage is that it allows you to design your t-shirt according to your needs and requirements. It not only allows you to design the t-shirt in your own way but also allows you to modify the design until it is completely perfect.

Another advantage of t-shirt printing is that you print the photographs of your loved ones on a t-shirt and can also use that t-shirt for gifts. This surely will be a unique gift for your beloved ones and they will be surprised. Another benefit of personalized t-shirts is that you can raise money for noble causes. You can even print personalized t-shirts for your team or school as uniforms. You can design the logo of your organization and can promote your products or services through t-shirt printing.

Heat Press Transfer Technology

Heat Press Transfer Technology
A heat press is a machine engineered to imprint a design or graphic on a substrate, such as a t-shirt, with the application of heat and pressure for a preset period of time. While heat presses are often used to apply designs to fabrics, they can also be used to imprint designs on mugs, plates, jigsaw puzzles, and other products.

Both manual and automatic heat presses are widely available. A new style of press that is semi-automatic has entered the market as well, allowing for a manual closing process with an automatic opening. Digital technology in newer machines enables precise control of heat and pressure levels and timing. The most common types of heat press employ a flat platen to apply heat and pressure to the substrate. In the "clamshell" design, the upper heat element in the press opens like a clamshell, while in the "swing-away" design, the heat platen swings away from the lower platen. Another design type a "draw style press" allows for the bottom platen to be pulled out like a drawer away from the heat for preparation of the graphic. Vacuum presses utilise air pressure to provide the necessary force and can achieve high psi ratings.

Most heat presses currently on the market use an aluminum upper-heating element with a heat rod cast into the aluminum or a heating wire attached to the element. For high-volume operations involving the continuous imprinting of items, automatic shuttle transfer presses are used. The substrates to be imprinted are continuously loaded onto the lower platen and shuttled under the heat platen, which then applies the necessary heat and pressure.

The pattern is printed in sublimating ink on sublimating paper which allows the pattern to transfer. You can get some highly effective patterns and great effects using this technique.

T-shirt

A T-shirt is a style of shirt. A T-shirt's defining characteristic is the T shape made with the body and sleeves. It is normally associated with short sleeves, a round neck line, and no collar. However, it may also include long sleeves, buttons, collars, or v-necks.
T-shirts are typically made of cotton fibers (sometimes others), knitted together in a jersey stitch that gives a T-shirt its distinctive soft texture. T-shirts can be decorated with text and/or pictures (Heat Press Transfer Technology), and they are often used to advertise, promoting products, companies, films and websites.

T-shirt fashions include many styles for both men and women, and for all age groups, including baby, youth, teen, adult and elderly sizes.

The T-shirt evolved from undergarments used in the 19th century, through cutting the one-piece "union suit" underwear into separate top and bottom garments, with the top long enough to tuck under the waistband of the bottoms. T-shirts, with and without buttons, were adopted by miners and stevedores during the late 19th century as a convenient covering for hot environments.
T-shirts, as a slip-on garment without buttons, originally became popular in the United States when they were issued by the U.S. Navy during or following the Spanish American War. These were a crew-necked, short-sleeved, white cotton undershirt to be worn under a uniform. It became common for sailors and Marines in work parties, the early submarines, and tropical climates to remove their uniform "jacket", wearing (and soiling) only the undershirt.

Named the T-shirt due to the shape of the garment's outline, it soon became popular as a bottom layer of clothing for workers in various industries, including agriculture. The T-shirt was easily fitted, easily cleaned, and inexpensive, and for this reason it became the shirt of choice for young boys. Boys' shirts were made in various colors and patterns. By the Great Depression, the T-shirt was often the default garment to be worn when doing farm or ranch chores, as well as other times when modesty called for a torso covering but conditions called for lightweight fabrics.
